Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today dismissed the No-confidence motion against Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayaka as “an obscenity” (kuruharapayak) and said it will be defeated.
The motion was taken up for debate this morning and was introduced to the House by leader of the joint opposition group MP Dinesh Gunawardena who accused Finance Minister of misleading the public by presenting false information “The Budget has been amended beyond recognition from what was presented in November last year .Public finances come under the purview of Parliament and the Finance Minister has disregarded this”, Mr Gunawardena said.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe who took part in the debate said that what was needed was a no confidence motion against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who was also the Finance Minister.
“It is the former President who violated the provisions of the Fiscal Management Responsibility Act and not the present Finance Minister. You can bring a no confidence motion against the Finance Minister now but during the previous regime those in the opposition could not do so,” he said.
Mr.Wickremeisnghe said that the Treasury was empty when the government took over. “An early election was held because (former Finance Ministry Secretary) said there was no way to take the country forward as the country was going bankrupt. “ It was D B Jayasundera who decided on the early election. Sumanadasa (astrologer) only fixed the date,” he said.
In a lighter vain, the Prime Minister said that the former President should be suspended by the House for a week for violating finance regulations and sent off Uganda.
