Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe today (Nov 18) said his government hopes that the system of establishing independent commissions, will be continued in the future.
Issunging a statement the Prime Minister said that the Presidential election had been conducted in a free and fair manner, since political influence had not been exerted on the independent election commission.
He pointed out that the public could therefore exercise their franchise without being intimidated during the poll.
Wickremesinghe thanked those who voted for ruling party presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa who fell short of some 1.3 million votes to beat rival Gotabaya Rajapaksa who emerged victorious at the polls.
He also expressed gratitude towards the Election Commission, Police, tri-forces, and other parties who had extended their support towards conducting a peaceful election.
