The Prime Minister's office has refuted certain news reports which cited Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as being opposed to a proposal to introduce laws against the Burka - a face veil worn by certain Muslim women.
Issuing a special statement, the Prime Minister's office clarified that Mr. Wickremesinghe had only stated that laws to this effect could be drafted upon consultation with All Ceylon Jamiathul Ulama by the Justice Minister.
These consulations could take place since the ACJU had passed a proposal to formulate laws on the banning of the Burqa, the Prime Minister's office noted while referring to Mr. Wickremesinghe's recent remarks in this regard.
