A seach operation was conducted at a cemetery in Puliyankulam in Vavuniya yesterday by the police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel over information that weapons used by the LTTE or gold stolen from Tamil civilians by the terror outfit might be buried there. However, the search was later called off as nothing was found.
Police obtained a court order to dig up certain areas of the cemetery after receiving information that an unidentified person or persons had been engaged in digging up the land in the night time over several days. This led to suspicions that someone was digging in the area in order to recover weapons or gold buried by the LTTE during the war.
However, despite an extensive search operation by the police and STF, the search did not bear fruit and was subsequently called off.
Vavuniya Police though, said investigations would continue to identify the person or persons who had been allegedly digging up the land.
