Police Assistant run over by Prisons Department vehicle

News

A Police Assistant was killed after being hit by a vehicle belonging to the Department of Prisons in Ambalantota at around 10 last night (16).

The victim, identified as 42-year-old Mohan Ratnayake, was attached to the Ambalantota Police. He was an area resident and a father of four children.

He had been on duty at the bridge in Ambalantota town when he had stepped onto the road to signal a speeding vehicle to stop. At this point, he had been struck by a double cab belonging to the Department of Prisons. The vehicle belonged to Prisons Headquarters in Colombo and was also carrying an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons at the time of the incident.

Just after being hit by the double cab, the victim had also been run over by a small lorry which was traveling in the opposite direction. This vehicle however, continued without stopping. However, this correspondent was able to follow the lorry involved in the hit-and-run and obtain visuals of the vehicle as it fled the scene.

The footage was later handed over to the Ambalantota Police, who took the vehicle into their custody. The lorry driver also surrendered to police.

The driver of the Prisons Department's double cab and the lorry driver are due to be produced before the Hambantota Magistrate's Court today.
