The police curfew which was imposed in Chilaw after a tense situation which arose in the area today (May 12), will be called off at 4 am tomorrow, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said.
He noted that the curfew which was initially expected to be lifted off at 6 pm, will be lifted off two hours prior to the scheduled time as the situation was brought under control in the area.
According to the Police, a dispute between two individuals on Facebook had escalated into a tense situation in the area this evening. Tense scenes were witnessed as area residents had gathered outside the shop belonging to an individual who had made controversial remarks via social media, police added.
Police said the law would be enforced under Emergency Regulations on the suspect who has been identified as 38-year old Abdul Hameed Mohamed Azmin, a resident of Chilaw.
