Minister Bandula Gunawardena said a police complaint has been lodged regarding an alleged assault on the sub-postmaster of the of Rukmalpitiya sub-post office in Katuwana in Hambantota district.
Issuing a statement, the minister said the alleged incident had occured yesterday, when the official had visited the home of a pensioner who was paralyzed to hand over his pension. Three individuals had allegedly surrounded the victim and assaulted him. He is currently receiving treatment at the Katuwana hospital.
Mr Gunawardena said both he and the Postmaster General have lodged separate police complaints over the incident and stressed that it was the duty of the police to take strict action against such individuals to ensure that Government officials, who are engaged in an exemplary service at this time of national crisis, can perform their duties without any fear.
