A suspect identified as 'Niyas' who was arrested recently, had funded the construction of two mosques on behalf of Zaharan Cassim - the ringleader of the Easter Sunday attacks, investigations have revealed.
Niyas was taken into custody during investigations carried out by the Horowpathana Police. He is believed to have maintained close ties with the now banned National Thowheed Jamath group.
According to the Police, Niyas was employed in Saudi Arabia for a decade, and had been working as a contractor / broker after returning to Sri Lanka. He is said to have funded the construction of two mosqes in the Ellewewa and Paththawa areas in Horowpathana.
Horowpathana Police are carrying out a questioning on the suspect under a 72-hour detention order.
