Update : While Police apprehended the main suspect associated with the shootout that took place in Matara earlier today, a further three suspects who were found with gunshot injuries were found on the roadside near the Karapitiya hospital. The suspects were arrested and taken to hospital.

One policeman who was injured during a shootout with a gang that came to rob a jewellery shop in the Matara town this morning succumbed to his injuries a short while ago.
The Police apprehended one gang member.
Three policemen and two civilians were injured in the incident where one policemen died due to his injuries.
The gang of six had fled the scene after Police arrived when they were alerted by the shop owner.
