The watcher of a large scale poultry farm in Kobeiganie, of the Kurunegala district whose videos of killing dogs entering the farm had gone viral on social media was remanded for two weeks today (20) by the Nikaweratiya Magistrate Sasika Lakmali Dassanayake.
The suspect was identified as S.M.H. Ganarathna, resident of Nebedawewa, Hengamuwa in Kobeigane.
Police told courts that though there was no complaint lodged, they initiated the inquiry based on the video which shows the suspect using a air gun and shooting at the dogs and allowing it die inside the poultry farm.
Initially police insisted that the suspect was killing a rabid dog, but subsequently the man who videoed the killing of the dog provided a statement to the police. He claimed several more dogs had been killed by hi
Later animal rights activists raised concern about the incident and called the police to probe the case.
Senior Superintendent of Police Upul Chandana Abeysinghe in charge of the Nikaweratiya Division ordered the ASP for the division L.Amarakoon to investigate the case.
