Poultry farmer worker jailed for two months, for killing dogs

News

A man found guilty on charges of cruelty towards animals after he allegedly shot and killed dogs entering a poultry farm in Kobeigane of the Kurunegala district has been given a two month jail term and fined Rs 100 by the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate.

The suspect S.M.S. Ganarathana, 55 was arrested after a video showing the man shooting at a dog with an air gun was posted on social video.

The sentence was given by Magistrate Sasika Lakmali Dassanayake who also ordered that in the event of the failure to pay the fine the simple imprisonment of two months will be extended by another two months.

Police informed courts that though there was no complainant they arrested the suspect based on the video circulated on social media.

However, police recorded the statement of the man who had recorded the video. He was a construction worker at the site.

Mr Saliaya Teannkoon, the lawyer for the suspect pleaded that the suspect regretted the offence committed and to end the case by giving him a lenient sentence.

Reports earlier said that the owner had ordered the poultry farm watcher to kill the dogs straying into the farm.
