A special ceremony to celebrate Christmas was held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (Dec 21) under the auspicies of Rev Dr. Malcom Cardinal Ranjith.
Rev. Malcom Ranjith addressing the gathering said the true spirit of Christmas is not the decorations or enjoyment gained by eating and drinking, but uniting to understand the suffering of the underprivileged and to take steps to provide assistance to them.
He also emphasized the importance of all leaders to work with commitment in order to create a better future for the underpriviledged and eradicate poverty.
Apostolic Nuncio in Sri Lanka Archbishop Pierre Nguyên Van Tot, priests and nuns, the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Minister John Amaratunga, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ministers and MPs including R. Sampanthan and many others participated in this Christmas celebration.
