President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Finance Ministry to pay off the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB)'s debts to the Ceylon Petroleum Coroporation (CPC), a Presidential Secretariat official said.
These instructions had been given after warnings of power cuts were issued last evening since the CPC had suspended fuel supply to the CEB which falls under the Power and Energy Ministry.
Fuel supply had been cut-off since the CEB had not fulfilled its due fuel purchase payments to the CPC for its power stations.
Power and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake had reportedly complained to the President that his ministry did not have the required fund to pay off the debts.
