President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed provincial level programmes to be carried out to rehabilitate drug addicts below the age of 18, the President's Media Division said.
These instructions had been issued to the National Drug Rehabilitation Authority after a report submitted to the President had shown that there were more than 100,000 drug addicts in this age group.
The Presidential Task Force on Drug Prevention, National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, and the Police had compiled this report. According to the report, 6100 minors were found to have been consuming heroin.
Meanwhile, the Western Province had topped the list for the most number of drug addicts, the President's Media Division noted adding that drug awareness programmes are currently underway in a bid to resolve this issue.
