President Maithripala Sirisena visited Jaffna today to monitor the situation after violent protests broke out against the rape and murder of a 18 year-old schoolgirl in Punguditivu in Jaffna District.
Protesters attacked alleged suspects when they were brought to the Kayts Magistrate Courts on May 19. On May 20, violent protests broke out in Jaffna, resulting in injuries to several policemen. The Jaffna court complex and several vehicles were also damaged. Police arrested 130 protesters over the incident.
