President Maithripala Sirisena has once again reiterated that the death penalty would be implemented as planned.
"This would be done for the betterment of the country despite objections being made by the European Union or other global bodies," the President said in response to questions raised during a meeting held with the heads of media outlets today (Mar 06).
He also pointed out that the Special Task Force, Police Narcotics Bureau, Customs Department and the Coast Protection Unit have been extending their fullest support towards the operation of anti-narcotics programme across the country.
"Raids and search operations are being carried out despite the absence of high-tech equipment" Mr. Sirisena pointed out adding that these officials have expressed satisfaction due to the ability to function independently unlike in the past.
Speaking further, President Sirisena said that measures are being taken to declare the sacred scriptures of the Tripitaka as part of a heritage item. On the same note, he added that India was willing to extend its support in this regard.
The President also said that March 16-23 would be declared as the Tripitaka Week.
