President Maithripala Sirisena today (Aug 2) reiterated that he would not give up his fight against drug criminals despite knowing the dangers that could befall him.
Addressing an event in Kurunegala, the President pointed out that state leaders do not stand against drug racketeers citing fears over their lives and the ability of such criminals to topple the government.
However, he emphasised that he would not halt his campaign against narcotics which is currently underway.
The President also claimed that drug criminals who have been funded by politicians are those who have been hurling insults against his anti-narcotic drive.
He noted that politicians who had failed to formulate counter-terrorism laws despite the need to do so in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, are now attempting to bring laws against the capital punishment.
President Sirisena has been repeatedly campaigning to re-introduce judicial hangings in the country - a move which has been met with stiff resistance by a majority of the UNP-led government and civic rights groups.
