The March 12 Movement has written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa requesting him to intervene to issue a circular that would place limits on luxury vehicles that people's representatives and government officials can purchase.
The letter notes that there is currently a dialogue among the public over the super luxury vehicles politicians have purchased using taxpayer funds. The movement asks the President to issue a circular stipulaing a maximum amounts that can be spent on each vehicle, limiting the number of occasions on which vehicles already in use can removed to purchase new ones and the number of vehicles that can be used.
It asks that the circular applies to all elected people's representatives, governors, chairpersons and directors of state corporations and statutory boards, all government officials including ministry secretaries and all other government officials who are entitled to official vehicles.
