President Maithripala Sirisena has sought the opinion of the Supreme Court regarding the manner in which the provincial polls could be conducted.
The Supreme Court hearing regarding the matter will be taken up on August 23.
The President had moved the Supreme Court to seek a determination on whether the provincial council elections could be conducted in line with the Proportional Representation system which existed before the Provincial Councils (Amendment) Act which was passed in 2017.
Accordingly, the Registrar of the Supreme Court requested the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) to inform its members about the President's request.
The Supreme Court’s determination over the matter is expected to be sent to the President before August 30.
