President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to release an announcement clarifying the ban on sawmills and carpentry workshops by next week, an official at the President's office said.
The announcement is expected to reiterate the President's view that new sawmills or carpentry workshops will not be registered in future. However those that are currently functioning some 300 carpentry workshops in the country will be able to continue functioning as usual, the official noted.
However, around 250 registered mobile carpentry workshops will be banned following a gazette which will be issued by the President to this effect.
The President took this decision owing to the depletion of forest cover, a spokesman for his office said.
