Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) arrested a businessman who was attempting to smuggle out gold jewellery of an undetermined value this morning.
Customs officials said the jewellery was hidden inside the bottom of a bag of lady's shoes. The businessman had attempted to leave through the Customs 'Green Channel' when he was stopped and searched.
The gold jewellery was studded with many gemstones and rubies, making it difficult to determine the exact value of the seized stock of jewelry, they said. It may well be the most valuable stock of jewellery seized on a single occasion, they added.
Further investigations are ongoing.
