President Maithripala Sirisena said according to the political system of the country it is the people, who have the sole right to decide on the election of a Prime Minister. “Every eligible citizen has the opportunity to cast his or her vote for any party of their choice. Based on the winning party, the Prime Minister will be choosen. That is the democracy and freedom,” the President said. The President was addressing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Kalutara District Conference at the Maithri Hall in Bandaragama yesterday. President Maithripala also requested all members to take the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) forward by uniting irrespective of divisions on parties, race, religions and cast. He urged the people’s representatives to fulfill the expectations of the public instead of waiting for elections. It is the responsibility of all public representatives to commit themselves to address the requirements of the public, he said. What is more important is not conditions, but creating a mechanism where all the members can work together. Therefore, all party members should be able to stand united ignoring petty differences, he said. The President added that everybody should be united to strengthen democracy and freedom within the SLFP similar to the way they contributed to remove the unlimited power of the Executive Presidency.
