Priority bus lanes to be implemented island-wide

The Government hopes to implement the 'priority bus lane' project throughout the island in future, Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka said. 

He was speaking to journalists after the first stage of the priority bus lanes was implemented today (15). Accordingly, the first phase of the project was implemented from Holy Cross Junction in Moratuwa to Katubedda and from Savoy Cinema to Bambalapitiya Junction. 

Priority bus lanes will be in effect from 6.00am to 9.00am every day. Speaking at the launch of the project today, Minister Ranawaka emphasized that this was a permanent measure and not a trial run. He said the Ministry gradually hopes to implement the project in stages along the Galle Road, from Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla along Parliament Road, from Borella to Maradana and along sections of the 138 bus route. 

He said the goal was to use experiences gained from the project towards setting up a new express bus service in future. 

The Ministry of Megapolis stated that infrastructure facilities along roads where the project is being implemented have already been improved. CCTV cameras and GPS technology will be used to ensure compliance on bus only lanes.
