Prisons Dept. advertises for the post of hangman

The Prisons Department today (Feb 12) has begun calling for applications for the post of hangman following President Maithripala Sirisena's repeated calls for the implementation of the death penalty.

According to an advert published by the Department, the applicant should be a male between the age of 18 and 45 who has passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination within two sittings with a minimum of six passes that include two Credit Passes.

The applicant should not have been convicted by any court over a character based offence.

In a bid to determine the mental stability of the applicant, all candidates would be subjected to a mental health test at the National Hospital. They would also have to submit a certificate from a government registered physician to prove their mental strength.

Applications require attestation by a government school Principal, Justice of Peace, Notary Public, Commissioned officer of the tri-forces, or a gazetted officer of Sri Lanka Police or an officer in a permanent government post drawing a basic annual salary of Rs 240,360.

If the applicant is in the public or provincial public service the head of the institution should attest the application, the Prisons Department noted.

Recruitments would be made following a structured interview and depending on the number of vacancies made available for the said position.

The salary of selected recruits will be paid as per the Public Administration Circular No 03/2016.
