The Prisons Department has decided to inspect the functionality of the gallows at the Welikada prison.
Accordingly, the Prisons Department has decided to seek the assisstance of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) in order to inspect the quality of the hangman's noose used in the gallows.
If the noose is not in a usable condition, a replacement is to be imported, a spokesman for the Department said.
The spokesman added that the current noose was imported from Pakistan and is 12 years old.
Meanwhile, applications for the post of hangman have been made available from today (Feb 11) until February 25.
President Maithripala Sirisena while addressing Parliament last week said that those convicted of drug related offences within the next two months would be subjected to the death penalty.
