UPDATE: The remains of Professor Carlo Fonseka will be handed over to the Medical Faculty of the University of Kelaniya in Ragama today (Sept 2).
Sources said that the body will be handed over to the Faculty according to the last will of the Sri Lankan academic and political activist.
Prof. Fonseka passed away at the age of 86 this afternoon.
He was a former dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and served as a president of the Sri Lanka Medical Council from 2012 to 2017.

Sri Lankan physician, academic and political activist Professor Carlo Fonseka passed away today (Sept 2).
Prof. Fonseka had passed away at his residence following a brief illness this afternoon. He was 86 years old at the time of his demise.
Mr. Fonseka had formerly served as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Medical Council and had also been a member of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party.
He was educated at Maris Stella College, Negombo, and St. Joseph's College Colombo before graduating with a first class MBBS degree from the University of Colombo.
