Proposals to establish a righteous media culture submitted to President

President Maithripala Sirisena today emphasized that the heads of the Media institutions should be committed to fulfill their obligations to build a knowledgeable society for the betterment of the society.

"It is also the responsibility of the media to criticize and point out the shortcomings and mistakes and provide accurate information to the public for the betterment of the country," he said.

He made these remarks participating in a ceremony, organized to submit a set of proposals to establish a righteous media culture in Sri Lanka by the Sri Lankan University Teachers Association of Communication and Media Studies, held at the National Library auditorium in Colombo.

President of the Sri Lankan University Teachers Association of Communication and Media Studies, Dr. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa presented the set of proposals to the President.

The President further said that the present Government highly value the principles of media freedom and said that in the near future the Right to Information Bill also will be passed in the Parliament.

“Some of the private media institutions work for an agenda of the political and cultural concepts of their owners. But it is their responsibility to use the given media freedom for the betterment of the country in a professional manner,” President Sirisena said.
