A protest was staged in Mannat today against proposed sand mining activities in the coastal areas of the island by an Australia based company.
The protest, organized by the Citizens Committee of Mannar, demanded local authorities to reveal on what basis permits were issued to a multinational company to engage in sand mining activities at the expense of the natural environment of the island which attracts thousands of seasonal birds annually.
Protesters also launched a signature campaign against this rape of the natural habitat of the region and send it to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
