Protest in Parliament over police attack on students

A group of MPs calling themselves the joint opposition carried placards and protested in Parliament today over the recent Police attacks as the the Government today appointed another committee to probe the incident.

The group protesting was led by MP Dinesh Gunawardena.
In Parliament Minister of Law and Order Tilak Marapana that the Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy Dr B.M.S. Batagoda has been appointed to probe the incident and make recommendations.
Minister of University Education Lakshman Kiriella also making a statement in Parliament said that though the Diploma in Accountancy by the HNDA was recognised as equivalent to a degree of Commerce in 1990, but subsequently the status had been reduced.
He said that the government was due to submit a fresh cabinet paper regarding the restoration of its status.
Meanwhile a major student protest was held in Colombo against the attack on the students last week.
