A protest is to be held in front of Fort Railway Station today at 3pm, against the assault on Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri and Dr. Kumudu Kusum Kumara, local media reported. Several civil organizations including National Movement for Social Justice, Purawasi Balaya and Aluth Parapura will join with the protest, it is reported. Former FUTA President and current media spokesperson Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri and Dr Kumudu Kusum Kumara were assaulted by a group of people near a May Day Rally in Kirulapone on May 1.
The United States has told Sri Lanka that the disposition of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr and its crew is a matter for Colombo to resolve under its own laws and international obligations, while signalling it is in active talks with Sri Lanka to contain Iran’s threat to US interests.
The government today granted permission for an Iranian warship with 208 on board to enter the country.
