Buddhist monks affiliated to the Inter University Students' Federation gathered near Fort Raliway Station and began protesting against the alleged reduction of the number of monks admitted to universities.
Police on Wednesday (April 29) used teargas on those who marched from Fort Railway Station to the University Grants Commission demanding immediate solutions to their problems.
The student monks tried to enter the UGC premises forcefully after breaking off the gate and barriers, reports said.
Both students and the police sustained injuries during the clash.
