Public Health Inspectors Union has begun raids of local fruit vendors in order to locate apples imported from the U.S, local media reported. Union Chairman Upul Rohana was quoted by media as saying the raids will be carried out island-wide from today till Jan. 27. The Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine ordered all stocks of apple imported from the U.S. to be sent back to warehouses. The director of environmental and occupational health, and food safety at the Ministry of Health stated that this measure was taken as a safety precaution. He made a request from the general public to refrain from consuming apples imported from the U.S. until further notice.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to vacate his official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo this morning, a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) source said.
