Railway unions have decided to commence a strike from midnight today (Jul 3) demanding the Transport Minister to stop exerting pressure on the Railways General Manager.
Transport Minister Arjuna Ranatunga had allegedly exerted pressure on the manager to reinstate a railways officer who had been sacked from office. This officer had been sacked after he had consumed alcohol during office hours, sources told Times Online.
The decision to commence a strike action had been taken at a meeting attended by rail unions this morning.
Meanwhile, Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando had reportedly handed over his resignation to the Transport Ministry yesterday.
