The Railways Department has filed a complaint at the Fort Police against the strike action by railway trade unions despite Railways being declared as an essential service.
Action would be taken against the trade unionists who are on strike for breaching Emergency Regulations, Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said.
According to the law, any attempt to disrupt an essential service will be considered as an offence. A gazette had been issued yesterday declaring Railways as an essential service, however unionists were adamant that the strike would continue.
According to the Railways Department, only seven out of the total 48 trains which were expected to operate in the morning had been functioning today (Jun 28).
Rail unionists are on a 24-hour token strike today by citing certain unresolved issues including salary anomalies in their sector. They claim that talks with the relevant authorities to address these issues have proved futile.
