The Railways Department has sought police assistance to tighten security as railway unions have threatened to engage in a strike action from midnight today (Jun 27).
A discussion had taken place with senior police officials in this regard, Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said adding that they would seek assistance of the Army if required.
The government issued a gazette notification today declaring Railways as an essential service. Accordingly, any action to disrupt such services will be considered to be an offence.
However, unions are adamant that they would continue to strike over certain unresolved salary anomalies and other issues in their sector.
"We will launch our strike starting from midnight today," Indika Dodangoda, Secretary of the Locomotive Engine Operators’ Union told Times Online.
