United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed agreement to nominate Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as Opposition Leader, sources close to the UNP leader said.
This was after UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa failed to attend two meetings which were held between the UNP leader and the Speaker in this regard, they said..
The appointment of Jayasuriya as Opposition Leader would mean he would have to resign from his position as Speaker.
A party source said the UNP leader had agreed to nominate Speaker Jayasuriya as Opposition Leader on the condition that he takes steps to appoint a young leadership group.
The post of Opposition Leader has remained vacant after Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed Prime Minister following his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa's election as President last month.
