Beleaguered Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake is to defend himself against corruption allegation at the Cabinet meeting today (Wednesday) which began in a short while ago in Colombo.
The one-time finance minister who was recently transferred to the foreign affairs portfolio is battling accusations in the Central Bank bond scam including using an apartment which was paid for by a suspect in the scam. Public calls to resign have been on the increase.
Mr. Karunanayake is expected to make a statement clarifying all issues at the cabinet meeting, highly-placed government sources said.
Attempts to contact Minister Karunanayke over the phone failed, but one of his close associates told Times Online that the minister is under intense pressure from the 'top leadership' to tender his resignation.
Meanwhile Senior Minister Sarath Amungama is tipped to replace Mr. Karunanayke in the eventuality of his much awaited resignation. (Bandula)
