The Road Development Authority (RDA) has advised drivers to maintain a speed limit of 60 kmph along the Southern Expressway due to heavy rains being experienced in the country.
RDA Chairman Nihal Sooriyarachchi said that the Southern Expressway in the Baddegama area has been limited to one lane after an earth embankment had collapsed onto the road.
Meanwhile, the Welipenna interchange of the Expressway has been limited to heavy vehicles due to flooding, he noted adding that the Matara exit point would also be closed for traffic if rains continue.
Sachith Munasinghe, an RDA Project Engineer, said that the road starting from the Kokmaduwa entry point of the Expressway until Weligama and Kananke has been inundated by floods.
Some areas in the expressway had been submerged due to floods measuring around four feet, he said.
Mr. Munasinghe urged drivers to switch on the hazardous lights if they stop the vehicle along the Expressway.
