Cabinet approval has been granted to amend regulations on the monthly stipends provided to students of low-income earning families who pass the Grade Five scholarship exam.
Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had proposed that the monthly stipend be increased from Rs 500 to Rs 750
The maximum earnings of a family, which is considered as a prerequisite to obtaining the stipend, would be amended to Rs 15,000, a cabinet paper by the Education Minister stated.
In addition, Mr. Kariyawasam had also proposed that the number of students who would qualify to receive the stipend, be increased up to 20,000.
