The remains of three Sri Lankan students who died in Azerbaijan due to a fire was brought to Sri Lanka today morning with the government agreeing bear the cost for the transportation, officials said.
The bodies were handed over to the family members.
Minister of Higher Education Bandula Gunawardena said that Rs 1.5 million was passed by the Cabinet as expenses to transport the remains from Azerbaijan. The Foreign relations Ministry co-ordinated the transportation of the remains through its missions overseas.
The deaths were reportedly caused as a result of suffocation from smoke inhalation due to a fire that has occurred last Thursday..
The victims were two sisters Malsha Sandeepani (23) and Tharuki Amaya (21) of Bokundara, Mahawatta Piliyandala and Hansi Madubashini (25) of Pahala Bomiriya, Kaduwela.
Malsha and Tharuki were past pupils of Lumbini Vidyalaya, Colombo while Hansi was an old girl of Bomiriya Central College. (DW)
