Retired Customs Inspector caught while smuggling gold

Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) have apprehended a retired Customs Inspector who was trying to smuggle in 2.45 kilograms of gold into the country. 

The suspect, aged 65 is a resident of Ja Ela. The seized gold is valued at  Rs. 14,054,897. 

The gold had been hidden inside a waist girdle worn by the suspect. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the gold had been brought from Dubai by a smuggler and handed over to the suspect. 

Sri Lanka Customs said investigations are being conducted to ascertain how the gold had been brought to the airport and the extent o the retired Custom's officer's involvement in the racket.
