The decision by the government to introduce sanctions against North Korea is in keeping with the country’s obligations as a member of the United Nations (UN), Foreign Affairs Minister Tilak Marapana told Parliament on Monday.
He said this in response to a question raised by JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissaanyake.
MP Dissanayake queried as to how the government has imposed sanctions against a country without informing Parliament beforehand.
The Foreign Minister said the UN Security Council (UNSG) had made a decision to impose sanctions on North Korea and Sri Lanka had taken the necessary measures in this connection as member of the UN. “This is not a decision taken overnight. There is an Act approved by Parliament that outlines the procedure to follow in such instances,” he explained.
