The writ petition which was filed seeking an order to conduct the Provincial Council elections has been fixed for September 09 by the Supreme Court.
This was announced when the petition was taken up before a judge bench of Justices Priyantha Jayawardena, Vijith Malalgoda, and Gamini Amarasekara today (Jun 17).
Notices were also issued to the members of the Elections Commission (EC) to appear before court during the next hearing. The EC has been named as a respondent in the case.
However, a lawyer appearing for the polls body had told court that the defendants did not have any objection towards the petition.
The petition had been filed by the Truth Seeker's movement who had sought a court order to conduct the elections for the Provincial Councils whose terms had ended.
The petitioners argue that the government has been deliberately delaying the elections while violating the voting rights of the people by using the delimitation report as an excuse to not conduct the polls.
