A group of scrap metal collectors staged a protest in front of Fort Railway station today demanding the government to address their issues as the new budget proposals failed to provide relief to them.
They alleged that the new budget reduced the tax on the imported iron which might cause a downfall in the industry. A kilogram of iron was brought to Rs 15 from Rs 30 recently.
T. Ramanathan who came all the way from Batticaloa to take part in the protest said the government should immediately intervene in the matter to make sure a decent pay for the workers. “ Our monthly salary is around Rs 7500, how can one support a family with this? ” he said.
