A sergeant attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was arrested for soliciting a bribe of Rs 80,000 from a businessman against whom a court case is being heard at present.
The sergeant had obtained the bribe by claiming that it would be given to the Judge before whom the case is being heard in order to refrain from taking legal action against the businessman.
The businessman who had filed a case at the Bribery Commission alleged that the sergeant had obtained a bribe of Rs 513,500 on a previous occassion to release himself after recording a statement on the case at the CID.
The complainant also accused the sergeant of requesting Rs 100,000 to bribe the Judge, out of which Rs 20,000 had already been given to the latter.
Officials of the Bribery Commission had arrested the sergeant while he was obtaining the remaining bribe of Rs 80,000 in Sapugaskanda, Gonawela. He will be produced before courts today.
