The seven suspects who were arrested for vandalising Buddhist statues in Mawanella were produced before the Mawanella Magistrate today (Dec 2).
Mawanella Magistrate Upul Rajakaruna ordered the seven suspects to be remanded till Jan 16, 2019.
While the above suspects were arrested on December 26, the Police together with the Intelligence Unit of the Police Special Task Force (STF) are carrying out operations to arrest another two suspects claimed to be linked with the same incident.
According to the police, all seven suspects are under the age of 25. The Police informed the Magistrate that the suspects have not only been linked to the Mawanella incident, but have also been identified as being involved in vandalising Buddhist statues in Gampola, Polgahawela and other parts of the country.
The Police further requested the Magistrate for permission to produce the suspects before courts in the above mentioned areas. However leave was given only for the suspects to be produced before the Polgahawela Magistrate's Court on January 9.
