Six suspects who were arrested yesterday (Dec 26) for vandalising Bhuddist statues in Mawanella have been remanded until January 02.
The remand order was issued when the case was taken up before the Mawanella Magistrates Court today (Dec 27).
According to the police, one suspect was arrested while attempting to vandalise a statue following which five others were arrested yesterday. Another suspect who was arrested today will be produced before the Mawanella Magistrates court tomorrow.
A team of officials who are carrying out a full-scale investigation into the incident under the instructions of IGP Pujith Jayasundara are on the hunt for two more suspects.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesman S.P. Ruwan Gunasekara said that IGP Pujith Jayasundara has ordered that the law be enforced to the fullest extent on these suspects.
Mr. Gunasekara also said that police personnel have been deployed for security in Mawanella to ensure peace and harmony in the area.
