The Government will not go ahead with a Budget 2016 proposal to enforce a 5-day week and instead allow such a work-week to be an individual arrangement by consent between employers and workers, it was announced in Monday.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe gave this assurance to representatives of trade unions who met him in Parliament to discuss these issues. He told trade unions that he had also made a statement in parliament that there won’t be any compulsory legislation, which workers feared, pertaining to a 5-day work week.
There are some companies, particularly garment factories that have a 5-day work week by consent with the workers. Others normally work a half day too on Saturday. Local rules pertain to a 9 hour work day with one hour for lunch. Under the budget proposal, that was to extend to 10 hours per day with one hour for lunch without working on Saturdays.
The PM also said there is no plan to hand over management of the FTZs to private companies, a proposal that was contained by the budget presented by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake. – ENDS
