SL officials hold talks on implementation of counter terrorism measures in line with UN resolutions

News

Sri Lankan state officials have held talks with UN Assistant Secretary General (ASG) Michèle Coninsx on implementing counter-terrorism measures in line with two resolutions of the UN Security Council.

During discussions on June 7 and 8, the Ms Coninsx had discussed methods to combat terrorism under UN Resolutions 2178 (2014) and 2396 (2017), the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

These resolutions are based on matters concerning border security, stopping the rise of terrorist fighters, and countering extremism.

Sri Lanka had acted in line with Resolution 1373 (2001) by freezing the assets of three extremist groups which were banned after the Easter Sunday attacks, it was pointed out at these discussions.

Officials from the Foreign Ministry, Law Enforcement and Intelligence Agencies, Attorney General’s Department, Customs, Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank had attended the meetings.

The UN Assistant Secretary General had arrived in Sri Lanka upon a request made by President Maithripala Sirisena to UN Secretary-General António Guterres in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday bombings.

During her brief stay, she had called on the President, Prime Minister, and other political, and civil society leaders.

Ms. Coninsx had also submitted an assessment report on the country's situation to Foreign Affairs Minister Thilak Marapana.
