The promulgation of a state of emergency across Sri Lanka has been confirmed by a gazette notification issued tonight (Tuesday) by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The gazette number 2061/18 issued under Section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance, as amended by Act, No. 8 of 1959, Law, No. 6 of 1978 and Act, No. 28 of 1988, states that emergency regulations were brought in because the President was “of the opinion that by reason of the existence of a public emergency in Sri Lanka, it is expedient, so to do, in the interests of public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community.”
Emergency rule is effective from March 6. The gazette doesn’t give a period in which the state of emergency will be enforced. – ENDS -
